Norgestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Here's the thing to know about pairing Danshen with norgestrel, your progestin-only birth control pill. Your body clears this hormone using a liver and gut enzyme called CYP3A4. In a small study, taking Danshen for about 10 to 14 days actually sped that enzyme up, which means it could flush norgestrel out of your system faster than usual. With a birth control pill, lower hormone levels can mean it doesn't work as reliably, and that raises the risk of an unintended pregnancy or some breakthrough spotting.

This is moderate, fairly preliminary evidence, not a sure thing. Still, since reliable contraception matters so much, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before adding Danshen, rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
