Why this applies to Bexarotene

Bexarotene falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Lentinan interacts with.

Laboratory research suggests that lentinan might increase the activity of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking lentinan.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for bexarotene (Targretin): your liver clears this medicine partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab and animal research hints that lentinan, the beta-glucan from shiitake mushrooms, may speed that enzyme up. If that held true in people, your body could break bexarotene down a little faster, which might lower its levels and weaken how well it fights your cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Bexarotene isn't a prodrug, so faster clearance means less effect, not more.

I want to be honest though: this is only seen in test-tube and animal studies, never confirmed in humans, so it's more of a theoretical caution. Still, since bexarotene is treating cancer, please loop in your oncologist or pharmacist before adding any lentinan supplement.

What Is Bexarotene Used For?

Brand name: Targretin

Bexarotene capsules (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) are used to treat the skin symptoms of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) in patients whose disease has not responded to at least one prior systemic treatment.

Bexarotene gel 1% (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) is used to treat the skin lesions of early-stage CTCL (Stage IA and IB) when other therapies have not worked or could not be tolerated. The gel is a topical therapy and is not intended for systemic use.
