Citalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Lentinan interacts with.

Laboratory research suggests that lentinan might increase the activity of cytochrome P450 2C19 (CYP2C19). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19 in patients taking lentinan.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C19 include proton pump inhibitors including omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole (Prevacid), and pantoprazole (Protonix); diazepam (Valium); carisoprodol (Soma); nelfinavir (Viracept); and others.

Here's the gist for citalopram (Celexa): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C19 to help clear it from your body. Lab and animal studies hint that lentinan might rev up that enzyme. If that happened in people, your body could break citalopram down a little faster, which in theory might lower its level and make it work less well. You could notice your depression symptoms creeping back, or feel like the medicine just isn't doing as much.

The honest part: this has only been seen in test-tube and animal research, never confirmed in humans, so it's more of a maybe than a real-world warning. Citalopram is a regular drug here, not a prodrug, so this would weaken it rather than strengthen it. Before adding lentinan, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Laboratory research suggests that lentinan might increase the activity of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for a decrease in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking lentinan.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist with shiitake-derived lentinan and your Celexa. In test tube studies, lentinan looks like it might rev up an enzyme in your liver called CYP3A4, which is one of the helpers that breaks down citalopram. If that enzyme works faster, your body could clear the drug a bit quicker, which in theory might leave less of it around and let your depression symptoms creep back.

But here's the important part: this has only been seen in lab and animal research, never in actual people. It's a weak, theoretical signal, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Citalopram isn't a prodrug, so the direction would be toward a slightly weaker effect, not more side effects. Still, chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding lentinan, and watch for any return of low mood.

What Is Citalopram Used For?

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
