Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Mestranol, Norethynodrel
Mestranol, Norethynodrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Lentinan interacts with.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for your birth control pill (Enovid-E, which combines mestranol and norethynodrel). Mestranol is converted in the body to ethinyl estradiol, the active estrogen, and that estrogen is broken down by an enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies hint that lentinan might rev up CYP3A4. If that happened in real life, your body could clear the hormones a bit faster, which in theory could lower their levels.
Why this matters: with a combined oral contraceptive, lower hormone levels can mean breakthrough bleeding or, more importantly, less reliable pregnancy protection. That said, this is only a laboratory signal and has never been reported in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding lentinan.
