Moringa + Clomipramine
Clomipramine brand names: Anafranil, Anafranil SR.
Clomipramine falls into 2 drug categories that Moringa can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, moringa might increase or decrease levels of CYP3A4 substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Moringa interacts with whole categories of medication. Clomipramine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Moringa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Clomipramine
Clomipramine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.
Some in vitro research suggests that moringa inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). However, other in vitro research suggests that moringa extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes. A pharmacokinetic study in patients with HIV shows no change in the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine, which is partially metabolized by CYP3A4, when administered concomitantly with moringa leaf powder 1.85 grams daily for 14 days.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the honest picture with moringa and your clomipramine (Anafranil). Clomipramine is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Moringa might tweak that enzyme, but the lab studies pull in opposite directions: some say moringa slows the enzyme (which could let clomipramine build up), others say it speeds the enzyme up (which could lower your levels). Clomipramine is an active drug, not a prodrug, so more in your system means more side effects like dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, or a faster heartbeat, while less could mean your OCD symptoms creep back.
The key word is theoretical. This is based on test-tube and animal work, and a small human study showed no real change with another CYP3A4 drug. So food amounts likely won't matter much, but check with your pharmacist before using concentrated moringa supplements.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Clomipramine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that moringa extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for clomipramine (Anafranil). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break this medication down. Lab studies suggest moringa may rev up that enzyme a bit. If that happens in real life, your body could clear clomipramine a little faster, which might lower its levels and make it work less well for your OCD symptoms.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. This comes only from test-tube research, it's rated a minor interaction, and we have no real-world reports showing it matters in people. Everyday food amounts of moringa are very unlikely to be a problem. Still, since clomipramine needs steady levels to work, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a concentrated moringa supplement.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clomipramine page
“A tricyclic antidepressant used mostly for OCD, clomipramine (Anafranil) is unforgiving of shifts in its blood level, which is why its 236 supplement interactions deserve genuine wariness. Most of the list involves metabolism: herbs that speed up or slow down the liver enzymes handling clomipramine can drag its level too low or push it…”

About Moringa
What is Moringa?
- Nutritional supplement
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol support
- Inflammation
- Skin conditions
Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.

Clomipramine Is Linked to Lower Levels of 3 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Clomipramine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Moringa — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
