Amiloride, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Oolong Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, using oolong tea with diuretic drugs might increase the risk of hypokalemia.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. In excessive amounts, caffeine can reduce potassium levels due to stimulation of the sodium-potassium pump. Diuretics can also cause lower potassium levels.

Here is the interesting twist with this combo pill. Your medicine pairs hydrochlorothiazide, which can lower potassium, with amiloride, a potassium-sparing diuretic that is specifically added to hold potassium up. So while the theory is that the caffeine in oolong tea could nudge potassium down a bit, the amiloride in your tablet is working in the opposite direction to protect it.

This concern is theoretical and based on pharmacology, not strong studies. A cup or two of oolong tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Very heavy caffeine intake matters more. Watch for cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat, and ask your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes or getting potassium checked.

About Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
