What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine at 1000 mg per dose. Glutamine is an amino acid — one of the building blocks your body uses to make protein.
The tablet also includes inactive ingredients (dicalcium phosphate, povidone, and cellulose) that help hold it together and allow you to swallow it.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence we hold shows L-glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease. It's possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery (healing after surgery), and critical illness from trauma.
These ratings come from clinical trial data, but they don't tell you whether this 1000 mg dose will work for your individual situation — that's something to discuss with your doctor.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. The most common side effects from oral glutamine are mild and digestive: belching, bloating, constipation, flatulence, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal pain.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. A few rare cases of dizziness, and in two patients with bipolar disorder, mania or hypomania, have been reported — though in one dizziness case, the symptom went away when the dose was lowered.
If you have kidney or liver disease, use this only under medical supervision. There isn't enough reliable safety data for pregnancy or breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant medications (drugs to prevent seizures), check your specific medication with the search tool on this page and confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement. Theoretically, L-glutamine might reduce how well these drugs work, though this hasn't been reported in actual patients yet.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine may help with sickle cell disease and possibly with recovery after surgery or critical illness. If you take an anticonvulsant medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — there's a theoretical risk it could reduce how well that drug works.
It's generally well tolerated, though digestive upset and headache are common. Talk it over with your healthcare provider to make sure it fits your situation.
