by Vitabase
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Glutamine 500 mg against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-Glutamine 500 mg per dose. L-Glutamine is an amino acid that your body produces naturally and uses for a range of functions, including supporting the immune system, maintaining gut health, and helping with recovery after stress or injury.
The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients: magnesium stearate, cellulose, vegetable stearin, dicalcium phosphate, and silica. These are excipients that help form and stabilize the tablet.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence we have shows L-Glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease. For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and recovery from critical illness (trauma), the evidence is rated possibly effective — meaning there's some promising data, but we don't yet have enough high-quality research to say it definitely works.
The facts we hold don't establish effectiveness for other uses beyond those listed.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Glutamine is generally well tolerated by healthy adults when taken by mouth. The most common side effects reported in trials are belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal pain.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. A small number of trial participants have experienced dizziness, and rare cases of mania or hypomania have been reported in people with bipolar disorder taking higher doses.
If you have kidney or liver disease, use this supplement only under medical supervision. The safety data in pregnancy is rated likely safe, but there isn't enough reliable information about use while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsants (anti-seizure medications), check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product. L-Glutamine converts to glutamate in your body, which may theoretically antagonize (work against) how your seizure medication functions — though this hasn't been seen in actual patients yet.
No other medication interactions are documented in the data we hold for this ingredient.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Glutamine may be worth considering if you have sickle cell disease or are recovering from surgery or critical illness, or if dealing with HIV/AIDS-related wasting — though the evidence for the last three is still developing. If you take anticonvulsants (anti-seizure medications), check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, since the supplement may theoretically interfere with how they work.
Most people tolerate it well, but gastrointestinal side effects are common. Your own doctor or pharmacist can help you decide if it's right for you and your medications.
