Why this applies to Dexlansoprazole

Dexlansoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), clarithromycin (Biaxin), indinavir (Crixivan), sildenafil (Viagra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist with Dexilant and Ceylon Leadwort. The plant compound plumbagin has been shown, in test-tube studies only, to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Dexlansoprazole is partly cleared by that enzyme (along with CYP2C19), so in theory blocking it could let a little more of the drug build up in your body.

If that happened, you might notice slightly more of the usual side effects, like headache, diarrhea, or stomach upset. But honestly, this is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not anything reported in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Dexlansoprazole is generally pretty forgiving. Still, since Ceylon Leadwort isn't well studied and can be harsh in larger amounts, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Ceylon Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica) is a plant long used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, mainly for digestion, skin problems, and pain. Solid human studies are lacking, and the plant contains plumbagin, a compound that can irritate skin and tissues and may be unsafe in larger amounts. What Is Dexlansoprazole Used For?

Brand name: Dexilant Solutab

Dexlansoprazole delayed-release capsules — sold as Dexilant and available as a generic — are used in patients 12 years of age and older to heal erosive esophagitis (EE), which is damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid. They are also used to keep that damage healed and relieve heartburn over time.

In addition, dexlansoprazole treats heartburn from non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) — that is, acid reflux that causes symptoms without visible damage to the esophagus. Both Dexilant and generic dexlansoprazole delayed-release capsules share these same approved uses.
