Chanca Piedra and Anisindione

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Anisindione

Anisindione falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research suggests that methyl brevifolincarboxylate, a constituent isolated from chanca piedra, can inhibit platelet aggregation. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Anisindione (Miradon) is an older blood thinner, similar in job to warfarin. It already raises your risk of bleeding by slowing how easily your blood clots. The concern here is simple: chanca piedra might add to that effect. In lab studies, one of its compounds appeared to keep platelets (the cells that help form clots) from sticking together well. So in theory, pairing the two could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher.

I want to be honest about how weak this evidence is. This effect has only been seen in a test tube, never in real people, so it's strictly theoretical. Still, because anisindione is a strong drug where small changes matter, watch for things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding this herb.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Anisindione page

“Anisindione (Miradon) thins the blood to prevent dangerous clots, and blood thinners leave little room between not enough effect and too much bleeding, so this list deserves real care. Of the 218 supplements and herbs on file, 202 can push its anticoagulant effect further and raise bleeding risk.”

About Chanca Piedra

What is Chanca Piedra?

Chanca Piedra
  • Kidney stones
  • Gallstones
  • Liver support
  • Urinary tract health
  • Digestive complaints

Chanca piedra is a tropical herb traditionally used as a 'stone breaker' for kidney and gallstones, and for liver and urinary health. Human evidence for these uses is limited and mostly small or preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a medical condition or take medications.
