Chanca Piedra and Naproxen Sodium

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chanca Piedra interacts with whole categories of medication. Naproxen Sodium falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chanca Piedra in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Naproxen Sodium

Naproxen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research suggests that methyl brevifolincarboxylate, a constituent isolated from chanca piedra, can inhibit platelet aggregation. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist with naproxen (the pain and inflammation reliever in products like Midol Extended Relief) and chanca piedra. Naproxen itself can already nudge up bleeding risk, since it can irritate the stomach lining and make platelets a little less sticky. Chanca piedra might add to that effect. In a lab study, one compound from the herb slowed platelets from clumping together, which is a key step in forming clots.

I want to be honest, though: this is theoretical. It comes from test-tube work, not from people, so the real-world risk is unclear. Still, watch for signs like easy bruising, a stomach ache, dark or bloody stools, or bleeding that's slow to stop. Before combining them, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Naproxen Sodium also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, chanca piedra might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract increases CYP1A2 activity. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates and lower serum concentrations. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for naproxen (the active ingredient in Midol Extended Relief). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 as one of the ways it breaks naproxen down. In lab studies, chanca piedra seems to speed up that enzyme. In theory, that could clear naproxen out of your system a little faster, which might make it work less well for your aches, cramps, or pain.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. It comes only from test-tube research and has never actually been seen in people, so the real-world effect is probably small or none. Naproxen isn't a prodrug, so we're talking about slightly weaker relief, not extra side effects. If you find your usual dose isn't cutting it, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)

About Chanca Piedra

What is Chanca Piedra?

Chanca Piedra
  • Kidney stones
  • Gallstones
  • Liver support
  • Urinary tract health
  • Digestive complaints

Chanca piedra is a tropical herb traditionally used as a 'stone breaker' for kidney and gallstones, and for liver and urinary health. Human evidence for these uses is limited and mostly small or preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a medical condition or take medications.
