Cola Nut and Chlorpheniramine, Methscopolamine, Phenylpropanolamine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Cola Nut interacts with whole categories of medication. Chlorpheniramine, Methscopolamine, Phenylpropanolamine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Cola Nut in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Chlorpheniramine, Methscopolamine, Phenylpropanolamine

Chlorpheniramine, Methscopolamine, Phenylpropanolamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Cola Nut interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. The combination product Pannaz contains phenylpropanolamine, a decongestant that mildly speeds things up: it can raise your heart rate, bump up your blood pressure, and leave you feeling jittery or restless. Cola nut is basically a caffeine source, and caffeine is a stimulant too. Stack the two together and those stimulant effects can simply pile on top of each other.

So instead of changing how the drug is broken down, you're really just doubling up on stimulation. You might notice a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or a higher blood pressure reading. This concern is based on expert reasoning rather than hard studies, so it's not a crisis. Still, if you have any heart issues or you're sensitive to caffeine, check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE

2 of 2

Chlorpheniramine, Methscopolamine, Phenylpropanolamine also falls under PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE.

Theoretically, phenylpropanolamine might increase the risk of hypertension, as well as the levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in cola nut.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Concomitant use of phenylpropanolamine and caffeine might cause an additive increase in blood pressure. Phenylpropanolamine also seems to increase caffeine serum levels.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to watch with Pannaz: one of its ingredients, phenylpropanolamine, is a decongestant that can nudge your blood pressure up on its own. Cola nut is basically a caffeine source, and caffeine is also a mild stimulant. Put them together and the effects can stack, so you may notice a higher blood pressure, a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, or trouble sleeping. There's also a report that phenylpropanolamine can raise caffeine levels in your blood, which makes those caffeine effects feel stronger.

This is rated moderate and is partly theoretical, but it's worth respecting, especially if you have heart issues or high blood pressure. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

“Pannaz combines an antihistamine, an anticholinergic, and phenylpropanolamine, a stimulant decongestant, and that three-way mix is why 10 of its 230 supplement interactions rate major and why I'd want those ten understood before any other line on this page. Cola nut is a caffeine-containing seed from West Africa used mainly as a natural stimulant for energy and alertness.
