These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Cola Nut interacts with whole categories of medication. Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine, Phenyltoloxamine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Cola Nut in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
STIMULANT DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine, Phenyltoloxamine
Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine, Phenyltoloxamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Cola Nut interacts with.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
This combination cold and allergy product contains phenylephrine and phenylpropanolamine, two decongestants that already have a stimulant-like push on your body. Cola nut adds caffeine on top of that. Stacking these stimulant effects together can make side effects more noticeable, things like a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, feeling wired, trouble sleeping, and a bump in blood pressure.
Keep in mind this is mostly a theoretical, expert-opinion concern rather than something proven in strong studies, so it is not a reason to panic. Still, if you have high blood pressure, a heart condition, or you are sensitive to caffeine, it is worth being careful. A casual cola drink is unlikely to matter much, but concentrated cola nut supplements give a bigger caffeine dose. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE
2 of 2Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine, Phenylpropanolamine, Phenyltoloxamine also falls under PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Concomitant use of phenylpropanolamine and caffeine might cause an additive increase in blood pressure. Phenylpropanolamine also seems to increase caffeine serum levels.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
This combination product contains phenylpropanolamine and phenylephrine, two decongestants that can mildly raise your blood pressure and heart rate on their own. Cola nut adds caffeine into the mix, and that creates a two-way problem: the two stimulants together can push your blood pressure up more than either alone, and phenylpropanolamine also appears to slow how fast you clear caffeine, so the caffeine sticks around longer.
In real life that might mean a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, restlessness, trouble sleeping, or a headache. The blood pressure concern is the main reason to be careful, especially if you already have heart issues or high blood pressure. A casual cola drink probably won't matter much, but concentrated cola nut supplements are a different story. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

“Ephedra worries me most on this list. This four-ingredient cold medicine, which pairs the antihistamines chlorpheniramine and phenyltoloxamine with the decongestants phenylephrine and phenylpropanolamine (Naldecon, Decongest), already pushes blood pressure and heart rate upward, and the 44 stimulant supplements on file, everyday caffei…”
