The piece to watch here is the phenylpropanolamine in your Profen LA. That's a stimulant decongestant, and cola nut brings its own caffeine to the table. Stack a stimulant on top of a stimulant and the effects can simply add up. You might notice a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, restlessness, or a bump in blood pressure. The cough and mucus parts (dextromethorphan and guaifenesin) aren't really the concern.

This is based mostly on expert opinion rather than hard studies, so it's a sensible caution, not a red alert. A little cola in a soda is unlikely to matter much, but concentrated cola nut supplements could. If you have heart issues or high blood pressure, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Theoretically, phenylpropanolamine might increase the risk of hypertension, as well as the levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in cola nut.
Cola nut contains caffeine. Concomitant use of phenylpropanolamine and caffeine might cause an additive increase in blood pressure. Phenylpropanolamine also seems to increase caffeine serum levels.

Here's the part that matters with Profen LA: one of its ingredients, phenylpropanolamine, is a decongestant that can nudge your blood pressure up on its own. Cola nut is basically a caffeine source, so pairing the two stacks two stimulants together. That combination can lead to an additive rise in blood pressure, plus the jittery, racing-heart, restless feeling you might already notice from the decongestant.

There's another wrinkle: phenylpropanolamine appears to raise caffeine levels in your blood, so the cola nut's caffeine may hit harder and last longer, meaning more jitteriness, trouble sleeping, and a faster heartbeat. The dextromethorphan and guaifenesin parts aren't really involved here. If you have high blood pressure or a heart condition, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining these.
