Why this applies to Lorazepam

Lorazepam falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen might affect the levels and clinical effects of drugs requiring glucuronidation.
In vitro research shows that danshen induces the expression of glucuronosyltransferases. However, it also inhibits the activity of glucuronosyltransferases, including various members of the 1A and 2B families. The extent of inhibition of a specific glucuronosyltransferase seems to be dependent on whether or not the danshen is processed via 'sweating'. This type of processing may affect the levels of constituents in danshen that alter glucuronosyltransferase activity. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the situation with lorazepam (Ativan) and Danshen. Your body clears lorazepam by attaching a sugar molecule to it, a step called glucuronidation. Danshen has been shown, but only in test tube and animal studies, to nudge those same glucuronidation enzymes both ways: it can speed them up and slow them down depending on how the root was processed. Because the lab data point in opposite directions, no one can say with confidence which way it would go in a real person.

In theory, if Danshen slowed that clearance, lorazepam could build up and leave you extra drowsy, dizzy, or foggy. This has never actually been reported in people, so I wouldn't panic, but please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Lorazepam Used For?

Brand name: Ativan

Lorazepam tablets (Ativan and generic) and the oral solution are used to manage anxiety disorders or for short-term relief of anxiety symptoms, including anxiety that comes with depressive symptoms. Loreev XR, an extended-release capsule, is specifically indicated for adults with anxiety disorders who are already stable on lorazepam tablets taken three times daily.

Ativan and generic lorazepam injections are used in two additional situations: treating status epilepticus (a medical emergency involving prolonged or repeated seizures) and as a pre-surgery medication in adults to produce sedation, ease anxiety, and reduce memory of events on the day of surgery.
