Atorvastatin Calcium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Here's the situation with Danshen and your atorvastatin (Lipitor). Your liver and gut use an enzyme called CYP3A4 to process atorvastatin, and Danshen can nudge that enzyme in either direction depending on how it's taken. Taking Danshen for a week or two seems to speed the enzyme up, which could clear your statin faster and make it a bit less effective at lowering your cholesterol. A single dose, oddly, may do the opposite and let more drug build up, which can mean more muscle aches or soreness.

This comes from small early studies, so it's not a sure thing, but the back-and-forth makes it unpredictable. Don't change anything on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two so your cholesterol numbers stay on track.

Theoretically, danshen might affect the levels and clinical effects of drugs requiring glucuronidation.
In vitro research shows that danshen induces the expression of glucuronosyltransferases. However, it also inhibits the activity of glucuronosyltransferases, including various members of the 1A and 2B families. The extent of inhibition of a specific glucuronosyltransferase seems to be dependent on whether or not the danshen is processed via 'sweating'. This type of processing may affect the levels of constituents in danshen that alter glucuronosyltransferase activity. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the honest scoop on combining Danshen with your atorvastatin (Lipitor). Your body partly clears this statin using enzymes called glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs). In test-tube studies, Danshen seems to pull in two directions: it can both speed up and slow down these enzymes, depending on how the root was prepared. If it slows them down, slightly more atorvastatin could linger in your blood, which in theory might raise the odds of side effects like muscle aches, weakness, or, rarely, liver irritation.

The big caveat: this is only seen in lab and animal research, and it has never actually been reported in people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since Danshen can also affect blood clotting, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

What Is Atorvastatin Used For?

Brand name: Lipitor

Atorvastatin is used alongside a healthy diet to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol, triglycerides (blood fats), and other harmful lipids, while raising HDL ("good") cholesterol. It treats primary hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), mixed dyslipidemia (mixed abnormal blood fats), hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides), and inherited conditions such as heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia — including in children aged 10 and older.

Beyond cholesterol control, atorvastatin is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, revascularization procedures, and angina (chest pain) in adults with coronary heart disease or multiple risk factors for it — including adults with type 2 diabetes who have risk factors for heart disease even without a confirmed heart disease diagnosis.
