Here's the concern with pairing ephedra and gabapentin. Gabapentin is one of the medications people take to help prevent seizures (and it's also used for nerve pain and restless legs). Ephedra is a strong stimulant, and it has actually been linked to seizures in some reports. So the worry isn't that ephedra changes how your body processes gabapentin. It's that ephedra may stir up the nervous system enough to work against what your gabapentin is trying to do, possibly making seizures more likely.

To be fair, this is a theoretical caution based on how these compounds behave, not strong proof. Still, ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason. Please don't change your gabapentin, and check with your pharmacist or doctor about safer options.

About Gabapentin

What Is Gabapentin Used For?

Brand names: Neurontin, Gralise

Gabapentin (brands include Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, Gralise, and Horizant) is primarily used to manage postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) — the nerve pain that lingers after a shingles outbreak — in adults. Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, and gabapentin capsules, tablets, and oral solution are also used as add-on therapy for partial onset seizures (a type of epilepsy) in adults and children aged 3 and older.

Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil extended-release tablet) has two specific approvals: treatment of moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS) in adults, and management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults. Horizant is not recommended for people who need to sleep during the day and stay awake at night. Gralise is approved only for postherpetic neuralgia and cannot be substituted for other gabapentin products due to its different release profile.
