Here's the concern with mixing ephedra and ethosuximide (Zarontin). Ethosuximide is your seizure medicine, working to keep those absence (petit mal) episodes under control. Ephedra is a strong stimulant, and stimulants like this can actually lower the seizure threshold, meaning they may make seizures more likely to break through. There have been reports of seizures linked to ephedra itself.

So the worry isn't that ephedra changes how your body breaks down ethosuximide. It's more that ephedra could work against what your medicine is trying to do, possibly leading to more staring spells or breakthrough seizures. This is based on how these substances behave rather than hard studies, so it's theoretical. Still, ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for safety reasons. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using anything containing it.

What Is Ethosuximide Used For?

Brand name: Zarontin

Ethosuximide — sold as Zarontin and also available as generic Ethosuximide — is used to control absence (petit mal) epilepsy. Absence seizures are brief episodes where a person loses awareness for a few seconds, often mistaken for daydreaming.

Both Zarontin and Ethosuximide products (capsule and oral solution forms) are approved for this use. Either may also be used alongside other seizure medicines when a patient has absence seizures together with other types of epilepsy.
