ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Metformin, Linagliptin
Metformin, Linagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Ephedra interacts with.
One study in animals shows that some components of ephedra may lower blood glucose levels. However, most human research suggests that ephedra and ephedrine, a component of ephedra, can raise blood glucose levels and might decrease the effectiveness of drug therapy. Monitor blood glucose concentrations closely.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist with Jentadueto (which combines metformin and linagliptin to lower your blood sugar). Ephedra acts like a stimulant, and in most people that stress-hormone effect tends to push blood sugar up. So the worry is that ephedra could work against your medicine and make it harder to keep your numbers in range. The evidence here is mixed and not very strong (animal data hints it could lower sugar, but most human data points the other way), so think of this as a possible problem rather than a sure thing.
On top of that, ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements and can raise blood pressure and strain the heart, which is a real concern for anyone managing diabetes. Please don't start it. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor about safer options.
