Moringa and Amitriptyline

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Moringa interacts with whole categories of medication. Amitriptyline falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Moringa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Amitriptyline

Amitriptyline falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa might increase or decrease levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some in vitro research suggests that moringa inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). However, other in vitro research suggests that moringa extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes. A pharmacokinetic study in patients with HIV shows no change in the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine, which is partially metabolized by CYP3A4, when administered concomitantly with moringa leaf powder 1.85 grams daily for 14 days.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with moringa and your amitriptyline. Amitriptyline is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and lab studies on moringa are genuinely mixed. Some test-tube research says moringa slows this enzyme (which could let amitriptyline build up, possibly meaning more drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, or dizziness), while other research says it speeds it up (which could weaken the medicine). So we honestly can't point you in one clear direction.

The good news: this is only theoretical, based on lab and animal work, and a human study on a similar drug showed no real change. Eating moringa in normal food amounts is unlikely to matter much. Before starting concentrated moringa supplements, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Amitriptyline also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, moringa might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that moringa extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for amitriptyline (Elavil). Your body partly uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to break this medication down. Lab studies suggest moringa may speed that enzyme up a bit, which could clear amitriptyline a little faster and, in theory, make it work less well. For a depression medicine, that might look like your symptoms creeping back or the drug not feeling as effective.

The good news: this is rated minor, and the evidence is only from test-tube and animal research, not real patients. Food amounts of moringa in a meal are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements taken daily are more of a question mark. If you're considering moringa, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on how you're doing.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

These ratings are for information only. Never start, stop, or otherwise change your therapy before speaking with your provider.

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.
