Moringa and Ranitidine Bismuth Citrate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Ranitidine Bismuth Citrate

Ranitidine Bismuth Citrate falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Moringa interacts with.

Theoretically, moringa leaf extract might increase the levels and clinical effects of P-glycoprotein substrates.
In vitro research shows that moringa leaf extract inhibits renal P-glycoprotein transport activity. So far, this reaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with moringa and ranitidine (the heartburn and ulcer medicine in Tritec). Your body uses a little transporter pump called P-glycoprotein to help move ranitidine out, partly through the kidneys. In lab dish studies, moringa leaf extract slowed that pump down. In theory, if the pump works less, a bit more ranitidine could hang around in your body, which might mean slightly stronger effects or side effects like headache, dizziness, or constipation.

The key word here is theory. This has only been seen in test-tube research, never reported in real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Occasional moringa in food is very unlikely to matter; concentrated supplement doses are the bigger question mark. Before adding a moringa supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

About Moringa

What is Moringa?

  • Nutritional supplement
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol support
  • Inflammation
  • Skin conditions

Moringa is a nutrient-rich plant whose leaves are widely used as a food and supplement, especially in parts of the world where malnutrition is common. Early research hints at possible benefits for blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation, but the human evidence is limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using moringa, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medications.

About Ranitidine

What Is Ranitidine Used For?

Brand name: Tritec

Ranitidine is used to treat several acid-related stomach and esophageal conditions. These include active duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the small intestine) and benign gastric ulcers (stomach ulcers), GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease, or chronic acid reflux), erosive esophagitis (irritation and damage to the esophagus from acid), and pathological hypersecretory conditions — rare disorders where the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and systemic mastocytosis. It is also used as maintenance therapy to keep ulcers and esophagitis from coming back after healing.

Over-the-counter products Acid Reducer and Wal-Zan tablets are specifically labeled to relieve heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach, and to prevent heartburn brought on by certain foods or beverages.
