Oolong Tea and Effient

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Effient

Effient falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Oolong Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, oolong tea might increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Oolong tea contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, the caffeine in oolong tea might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: Effient (prasugrel) already works hard to keep your platelets from clumping, which is exactly how it prevents another heart attack or a clot in your stents. The thinking is that caffeine and the plant compounds in oolong tea may have a mild blood-thinning effect of their own. Stacked on top of Effient (and the aspirin you likely take with it), that could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk a little higher.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though: this comes only from lab studies, and it has never actually been reported in people. A cup or two of oolong as a beverage is very unlikely to cause trouble. Just watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums, and check with your pharmacist before using concentrated tea extracts.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Effient page

“Effient (prasugrel) keeps platelets from forming clots, usually after a stent or a heart attack, and I would not pair supplements with it casually. Roughly 200 ingredients on this list can thin the blood further and raise bleeding risk, including two of the five rated major.”

  • Weight management
  • Mental alertness and energy
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Antioxidant support

Oolong tea is a traditional partially oxidized tea made from the same plant as green and black tea, and it provides caffeine and plant antioxidants. As a beverage it is generally considered safe for most healthy adults in moderate amounts, but evidence for specific health benefits like weight loss or blood sugar control is limited. If you have heart, blood pressure, or caffeine-sensitivity concerns, talk with your pharmacist or doctor.
