Red Clover + Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate
Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate brand name: Caffeine and Sodium Benzoate.
Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate falls into 3 drug categories that Red Clover can interact with; the most serious is rated minor. Theoretically, red clover might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2; however, a small clinical study found no effect.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Red Clover interacts with whole categories of medication. Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Red Clover in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 3Why this applies to Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate
Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Red Clover interacts with.
In vitro evidence shows that red clover inhibits CYP1A2. However, a clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of caffeine, a CYP1A2 probe substrate.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the gist for caffeine and sodium benzoate (often given as an injection, but caffeine is the part that matters here). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear caffeine out of your system. In test-tube studies, red clover seemed to slow that enzyme down a little, which in theory could let caffeine linger longer and lead to jitteriness, a racing heart, or trouble sleeping.
But here's the reassuring part: when researchers actually tested this in people taking red clover isoflavones twice daily for two weeks, caffeine levels didn't budge. So this is mostly a theoretical, lab-only concern that didn't pan out in real life. Still, if you notice extra restlessness, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro evidence shows that red clover might inhibit CYP3A4 isoenzymes. However, a clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of alprazolam, a CYP3A4 probe substrate.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the short version: this one is mostly theoretical, and the real-world signal is reassuring. In a test tube, red clover's isoflavones can mildly block CYP3A4, a liver enzyme. If that happened in the body, a drug cleared by that enzyme could build up a bit. But when researchers actually gave people standardized red clover for two weeks, it didn't change the levels of a sensitive CYP3A4 test drug at all.
With caffeine and sodium benzoate, the caffeine portion is mainly handled by a different enzyme (CYP1A2) anyway, so a small CYP3A4 effect is unlikely to matter much. If you ever feel extra jittery, your heart racing, or trouble sleeping, that's worth mentioning. As always, check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining these.

CAFFEINE
3 of 3Red clover contains genistein. Taking genistein 1 gram daily for 14 days seems to inhibit caffeine clearance and metabolism in healthy females. However, this effect does not seem to occur with the lower amounts of genistein found in red clover. A clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of caffeine.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the short version: this one is mostly theoretical, and in real life it's very unlikely to cause you trouble. The caffeine in caffeine and sodium benzoate is cleared by a liver enzyme (CYP1A2). In a lab sense, high doses of genistein (one of red clover's plant compounds) can slow that clearance, which could let caffeine linger and add to jitteriness, a racing heart, or trouble sleeping.
But the key point is the dose. That effect showed up with about 1 gram of pure genistein daily, far more than you get from red clover. In a real study, red clover standardized to 60 mg isoflavones twice daily did not change caffeine levels at all. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you notice extra jitters, just mention it to your pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate page
“Caffeine and sodium benzoate is itself a stimulant medication, so the supplements most likely to cause trouble are the ones doing the same job. Seven of the 208 ingredients on file rate major, several of them stimulant herbs such as ephedra that can pile extra blood pressure and heart strain onto a drug already revving the nervous system.”

About Red Clover
What is Red Clover?
- Menopause symptoms (hot flashes)
- High cholesterol
- Bone health/osteoporosis
- Skin and hair concerns
- Women's health
Red clover is a plant rich in isoflavones (plant compounds with weak estrogen-like activity) that is most often used for menopause symptoms like hot flashes. The evidence is mixed and generally weak, with some studies showing modest benefit and others showing none. Because of its hormone-like effects, it's not for everyone—talk with your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.
