Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6. Theoretically, schizonepeta might increase the effects and side effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break down amitriptyline. Lab and animal studies hint that a compound in Schizonepeta may slow this enzyme down. If that happened in people, amitriptyline could clear more slowly and build up in your system, which may mean stronger effects and more side effects than usual.

With amitriptyline, that could look like extra drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, dizziness when standing, or a faster heartbeat. Here's the honest part: this concern comes only from test-tube and animal research, not human studies, so we really don't know how much it matters in real life. I wouldn't panic, but please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 (among others) to help clear amitriptyline. A compound in Schizonepeta has been shown to slow that enzyme down, but only in lab and animal studies so far. In theory, if that enzyme works more slowly, amitriptyline could linger and build up a bit, nudging its effects and side effects higher.

For amitriptyline specifically, that might mean more drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness on standing, or a faster heartbeat. I want to be honest, though: this is theoretical and the human evidence just isn't there yet, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since amitriptyline can be sensitive to changes, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.
