Lamotrigine falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS — the group Uva Ursi interacts with.

Theoretically, uva ursi may increase levels of drugs metabolized by glucuronidation.
In vitro, uva ursi extract appears to strongly inhibit UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A1 (UGT1A1). However, uva ursi extract does not appear to inhibit UGT1A1 in animal models. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body clears lamotrigine mostly through a process called glucuronidation (the UGT enzymes). In a test tube, uva ursi blocked one of those enzymes (UGT1A1). If that happened in people, lamotrigine could clear more slowly and build up, which might mean more side effects like dizziness, blurred or double vision, drowsiness, headache, or unsteadiness.

But I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This effect showed up only in lab studies, did not appear in animal studies, and has never been reported in actual people. So this is theoretical. Since seizure control is too important to leave to guesswork, please loop in your pharmacist or neurologist before adding uva ursi, and use it only short-term if they say it's okay.

Uva ursi is a traditional herb used mainly for urinary tract infections, and its leaves contain a compound called arbutin that may have antimicrobial effects in the urine. Evidence in people is limited, and because high doses or long-term use may be harmful to the liver and could be toxic, it should only be used short-term and with guidance from a healthcare professional. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Lamotrigine Used For?

Brand name: Lamictal

Lamotrigine is used to treat several types of seizures in adults and children aged 2 and older — including partial-onset seizures, generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures, and seizures related to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. In older teens and adults, it can also be used alone (monotherapy) after transitioning off another seizure medicine.

For adults with bipolar I disorder, lamotrigine is used as a maintenance treatment — meaning it helps delay the return of mood episodes like depression, mania, or mixed states. It is not approved to treat an active manic or mixed episode that's happening right now.
