Yerba Mate and Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Yerba Mate interacts with whole categories of medication. Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Yerba Mate in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

STIMULANT DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine

Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of stimulant drugs and yerba mate might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Due to the CNS stimulant effects of the caffeine, concomitant use can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: yerba mate has caffeine in it, and the pseudoephedrine in your Sudafed Cold/Flu is a stimulant too. Stack the two together and you can get more of that wired, jittery feeling. Think racing heart, feeling shaky, trouble falling asleep, a bump in blood pressure, or feeling anxious and restless. None of that is dangerous for most healthy folks, but it can be uncomfortable.

This is mostly an add-up effect, not the mate changing how your body breaks the medicine down, and the warning rests on expert opinion rather than hard studies. A cup or two of mate is likely fine for many people, but if you have high blood pressure or heart issues, check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Dextromethorphan, Pseudoephedrine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical picture with Sudafed Cold/Flu (dextromethorphan plus pseudoephedrine) and yerba mate. Lab studies suggest yerba mate can mildly slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps clear part of the dextromethorphan in your cold medicine. In theory, that could let a bit more build up, nudging you toward side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, or a foggy, jittery feeling.

Honestly, this is rated minor and rests only on test-tube data, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger thing to remember is that both yerba mate and pseudoephedrine are stimulants, so together they can leave you wired, restless, or with a racing heart or higher blood pressure. If you notice that, ease off the mate and check with your pharmacist.

About Yerba Mate

What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate
  • Energy and alertness
  • Weight loss
  • Mental focus
  • Digestive support
  • Antioxidant support

Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
