Eliglustat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist for Cerdelga (eliglustat). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medicine. In lab dish studies, yerba mate appears to slow that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, eliglustat could build up more than expected, which might bump up its known side effects like nausea, headache, tiredness, joint pain, or in rare cases changes in heart rhythm.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's only based on test-tube research, not on people, so it's theoretical and rated minor. An occasional cup is unlikely to be a problem. Still, eliglustat is a drug where blood levels matter, so it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before making mate a daily habit.

About Eliglustat

What Is Eliglustat Used For?

Brand name: Cerdelga

Cerdelga (eliglustat) is used for the long-term treatment of Gaucher disease type 1 in adults. Gaucher disease type 1 is a genetic condition in which a fatty substance called glucosylceramide builds up in organs like the liver, spleen, and bone marrow, causing them to enlarge and leading to problems like anemia and low platelet counts.

Cerdelga is only appropriate for adults whose bodies process the drug in a predictable way — specifically those identified as CYP2D6 extensive metabolizers (EMs), intermediate metabolizers (IMs), or poor metabolizers (PMs) by an FDA-cleared genetic test. People who are CYP2D6 ultra-rapid metabolizers may not reach drug levels high enough to benefit, and Cerdelga is not recommended for them.
