Escitalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of CYP1A2 inhibitors and yerba mate might increase levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the rate of caffeine clearance and increase caffeine levels.

Here's the thing to know about this pairing: it's really about the caffeine in the yerba mate, not about escitalopram (Lexapro) itself. Escitalopram can mildly slow down the liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that clears caffeine from your body. In theory, that means caffeine could hang around a bit longer, so you might feel more jittery, anxious, restless, or have trouble sleeping or a racing heartbeat.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is rated as a minor, theoretical concern based on how the enzyme works, not on strong human studies. Escitalopram is a fairly weak blocker of that enzyme, so for most people enjoying mate in normal amounts, this won't be a big deal. If you notice extra jitteriness or poor sleep, ease back on the mate and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist: lab studies suggest yerba mate may slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and escitalopram is partly cleared by that pathway. In theory, if that enzyme works more slowly, a bit more escitalopram could linger in your body, which might nudge up side effects like nausea, headache, trouble sleeping, or feeling jittery. Escitalopram is not a prodrug, so this would mean a touch more effect, not less.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is only test-tube evidence, the interaction is rated minor, and escitalopram actually leans more on a different enzyme (CYP2C19). A warm cup of mate is unlikely to cause problems. If you're using concentrated supplements or feel extra wired, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Brand name: Lexapro

Escitalopram treats major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and in teens 12 and older. It also treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which means excessive, hard-to-control worry, in adults.

Some details depend on the product. Lexapro tablets are also labeled for GAD in children 7 and older. Escitalopram capsules are labeled for MDD and GAD in adults younger than 65. The capsules are also labeled for MDD in teens 12 and older.
