Escitalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of CYP1A2 inhibitors and yerba mate might increase levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the rate of caffeine clearance and increase caffeine levels.

Here's the thing to know about this pairing: it's really about the caffeine in the yerba mate, not about escitalopram (Lexapro) itself. Escitalopram can mildly slow down the liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that clears caffeine from your body. In theory, that means caffeine could hang around a bit longer, so you might feel more jittery, anxious, restless, or have trouble sleeping or a racing heartbeat.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is rated as a minor, theoretical concern based on how the enzyme works, not on strong human studies. Escitalopram is a fairly weak blocker of that enzyme, so for most people enjoying mate in normal amounts, this won't be a big deal. If you notice extra jitteriness or poor sleep, ease back on the mate and mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Escitalopram Used For?

Brand name: Lexapro

Escitalopram treats major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and in adolescents 12 years of age and older. It also treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults.

Lexapro (escitalopram) tablets are additionally approved to treat generalized anxiety disorder in pediatric patients 7 years of age and older. Escitalopram Capsules are indicated for MDD and GAD in adults younger than 65 years of age, and for MDD in pediatric patients 12 years and older — the capsule form is not indicated for patients 65 and older.
