Maraviroc falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist for Selzentry (maraviroc). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medication down and clear it out. In lab dish studies (not in actual people), yerba mate appears to slow that enzyme a bit. If that held true in the body, maraviroc could build up slightly, which in theory might mean more of its usual side effects like dizziness when you stand up, headache, fatigue, or stomach upset.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical and graded as minor. The everyday amount of yerba mate most folks drink is unlikely to cause a real problem. Still, because keeping HIV treatment steady matters, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you drink concentrated mate extracts.

About Maraviroc

What Is Maraviroc Used For?

Brand names: Celsentri, Selzentry

Maraviroc treats a specific type of HIV-1 infection called CCR5-tropic HIV-1. It is always used alongside other antiretroviral (anti-HIV) medicines — never alone. A special test called a tropism assay must be done before starting treatment to confirm you have the right type of HIV.

Selzentry (the brand-name oral solution and tablet) is approved for adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 2 kg. Generic maraviroc tablets are approved for adults and pediatric patients aged 2 years and older weighing at least 10 kg. Neither form is recommended for patients whose HIV is classified as dual/mixed-tropic or CXCR4-tropic.
