Here's the key thing to understand: this interaction is really about the caffeine in yerba mate, not your birth control pill. The estrogen in your pill (mestranol) can gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which is the same enzyme that breaks down caffeine. So if you drink yerba mate while on this pill, the caffeine may hang around a bit longer in your body.

In plain terms, that just means your mate might hit a little harder. You may notice more jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. This is rated minor and is only theoretical, so it's not dangerous for most people. If you feel buzzed, simply cut back on how much mate you drink. Your pill itself still works fine. Here's the gist for your birth control pill. The estrogen part (mestranol) and the progestin (norethindrone) are partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab studies (test tube only, not real people), yerba mate appears to slow that enzyme down a little. In theory, that could let a bit more hormone hang around in your body, which might mean slightly more of the usual estrogen-type effects like nausea, breast tenderness, or spotting.

Honestly, though, this is a minor, theory-based concern, and a cup or two of mate is unlikely to cause real trouble. Your pill's effectiveness shouldn't drop. If you drink mate heavily or use concentrated extracts, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Yerba mate is loaded with caffeine, so when you pair the two, that caffeine tends to hang around longer than it normally would (studies suggest clearance can drop by roughly 40% to 65%).

What that feels like in real life: the same cup of mate may hit you harder. Think jitters, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired and anxious. The good news is this is rated a minor interaction, and it doesn't make your pill less effective at preventing pregnancy.
