Yerba Mate + Metaproterenol
Metaproterenol brand names: Metaproterenol, Metaprel.
Yerba Mate has a moderate interaction with Metaproterenol. Theoretically, the caffeine in yerba mate might increase the cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists, especially if taken in large amounts.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS
Why this applies to Metaproterenol
Metaproterenol falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine can increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: metaproterenol is a quick-relief breathing medicine that opens up your airways, but it can also rev up your heart a little. It tends to bump up your heart rate and can sometimes cause a jittery, shaky, or pounding feeling. Yerba mate has caffeine, which is a stimulant too. Stacked together, these two can add up and make those heart-related effects more noticeable, like a racing pulse, palpitations, or feeling wired and shaky.
I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is a theoretical concern based on how both substances work, not something proven in big studies. A regular cup or two of mate is unlikely to be a problem for most folks, but large amounts could matter. If you notice your heart racing, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metaproterenol page
“Metaproterenol is an older bronchodilator for asthma and COPD, and because the receptors it stimulates to open the airways also quicken the heart, its 32 interacting supplements call for real vigilance. The lone major entry is activated charcoal, which can bind the drug and cut how much reaches your bloodstream.”

About Yerba Mate
What is Yerba Mate?
- Energy and alertness
- Weight loss
- Mental focus
- Digestive support
- Antioxidant support
Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
