Yerba Mate + Methoxsalen
Methoxsalen brand names: Oxsoralen, Oxsoralen Ultra.
Methoxsalen falls into 2 drug categories that Yerba Mate can interact with; the most serious is rated minor. Theoretically, concomitant use of CYP1A2 inhibitors and yerba mate might increase levels and adverse effects of the caffeine in yerba mate.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Yerba Mate interacts with whole categories of medication. Methoxsalen falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Yerba Mate in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS
1 of 2Why this applies to Methoxsalen
Methoxsalen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INHIBITORS — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.
Yerba mate contains caffeine. Caffeine is metabolized by CYP1A2. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP1A2 may decrease the rate of caffeine clearance and increase caffeine levels.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: methoxsalen (Oxsoralen) can slow down an enzyme in your liver called CYP1A2, and that same enzyme is what your body uses to clear caffeine. Yerba mate is loaded with caffeine, so in theory the caffeine could linger longer and pile up a bit. That might leave you feeling jittery, restless, or wired, with a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or an upset stomach.
I'll be honest with you, this concern is theoretical, based on how the drug works rather than on real-world reports, so it's rated as minor. If you notice extra caffeine jitters, easing back on the mate usually settles things. Check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions.

METHOXSALEN (Oxsoralen)
2 of 2Yerba mate contains caffeine. Methoxsalen reduces caffeine metabolism.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about pairing yerba mate with methoxsalen (Oxsoralen). This isn't really about the methoxsalen building up. Instead, methoxsalen can slow down the enzyme in your liver that clears caffeine, and yerba mate is loaded with caffeine. So the caffeine from your mate may hang around longer and feel stronger than usual.
In plain terms, you might notice more jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired and anxious. This interaction is considered minor and is mostly theoretical, so it's not an emergency. If you drink a lot of mate, just keep an eye on how you feel, and chat with your pharmacist or doctor about whether to ease back. Never change your methoxsalen on your own.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Methoxsalen page
“Methoxsalen (Oxsoralen) works by deliberately making skin sensitive to ultraviolet light to treat psoriasis and vitiligo, so its supplement list deserves an unhurried, serious read. Twenty of the 48 ingredients on file add photosensitizing effects of their own, bergamot oil among them, and that stacking can push a carefully dosed light…”

About Yerba Mate
What is Yerba Mate?
- Energy and alertness
- Weight loss
- Mental focus
- Digestive support
- Antioxidant support
Yerba mate is a caffeine-containing herbal beverage from South America that is widely enjoyed for its stimulating, coffee-like effects. While it is rich in antioxidants and is being studied for weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, strong human evidence for most health claims is limited. Drinking very hot mate over many years has been linked to higher risk of certain cancers, so enjoy it warm and in moderation.
