Pimozide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yerba Mate interacts with.

Theoretically, yerba mate might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yerba mate extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking yerba mate may increase levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the basic idea: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down pimozide. Some lab studies suggest yerba mate can slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in a real person, pimozide could clear out more slowly and build up to higher levels in the blood.

Why does that matter with pimozide specifically? It's a drug that can affect your heart rhythm (a QT prolongation risk), and higher levels could mean more chance of that, plus drowsiness, dizziness, or muscle stiffness. That said, this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from studies in people, so it's theoretical and rated minor. Still, because pimozide is a sensitive drug, I'd run your mate habit past your pharmacist or doctor rather than guess. Don't change anything on your own.

What Is Pimozide Used For?

Brand name: Orap

Pimozide tablets are used to suppress motor tics (involuntary movements) and phonic tics (involuntary sounds or words) in people with Tourette's Disorder. It is reserved for patients whose daily life or development is severely affected by their tics — it is not intended as a first-line treatment, and it is not used for tics that are mild or mainly cosmetic concerns.

Pimozide is not meant for tics caused by other conditions or medications, and it should not be used for simple tics unrelated to Tourette's Disorder.
