Fluoxetine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Ceylon Leadwort interacts with.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), and others.

Your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear fluoxetine (Prozac). Lab studies suggest that plumbagin, a compound in Ceylon Leadwort, can slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let fluoxetine build up a little more than usual. Fluoxetine isn't a prodrug, so more of it means more effect, and possibly more side effects like nausea, headache, trouble sleeping, jitteriness, or stomach upset.

The important thing to know: this is only seen in test-tube research, not in real people, so it's mostly theoretical. Small culinary or traditional amounts are unlikely to cause trouble, but concentrated supplements are a bigger unknown. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your fluoxetine on your own.

Plumbagin, a constituent of Ceylon leadwort, has been shown to inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, Ceylon leadwort might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9. Drugs that are metabolized by CYP2C9 include celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac (Voltaren), fluvastatin (Lescol), glipizide (Glucotrol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), irbesartan (Avapro), losartan (Cozaar), phenytoin (Dilantin), piroxicam (Feldene), tamoxifen (Nolvadex), tolbutamide (Tolinase), torsemide (Demadex), and S-warfarin (Coumadin).

Here's the gist with Ceylon Leadwort and your fluoxetine (Prozac). The plant contains a compound called plumbagin that, in lab dish studies, slowed down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Fluoxetine is partly handled by that enzyme (and others), so in theory blocking it could let a bit more fluoxetine build up in your system.

If that happened, you might notice stronger side effects like jitteriness, trouble sleeping, nausea, or headache. The honest part: this is only a test-tube finding and has never actually been reported in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since both can affect how you feel, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding this supplement, rather than starting it on your own.

Fluoxetine is approved to treat four conditions: major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa (a binge-eating and purging disorder), and panic disorder — with or without agoraphobia (fear of situations that feel hard to escape).

It works for adults across all four conditions, and for children and teens with depression (ages 8–18) and OCD (ages 7–17).
