Bexarotene falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, use of chanca piedra might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body clears bexarotene partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, chanca piedra appears to slow that enzyme down. If that same thing happened in people, bexarotene could build up to higher levels than expected, which may mean stronger effects and more side effects from the drug.

With bexarotene, that could look like worse high blood fats (triglycerides and cholesterol), low thyroid activity, headache, fatigue, or low white blood cell counts. I want to be honest though, this concern is theoretical and based only on lab data, not real cases in humans. Since bexarotene is a serious cancer medicine that your team monitors closely, please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding chanca piedra.

What Is Bexarotene Used For?

Brand name: Targretin

Bexarotene capsules (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) are used to treat the skin symptoms of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) in patients whose disease has not responded to at least one prior systemic treatment.

Bexarotene gel 1% (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) is used to treat the skin lesions of early-stage CTCL (Stage IA and IB) when other therapies have not worked or could not be tolerated. The gel is a topical therapy and is not intended for systemic use.
