Chanca Piedra and Estradiol, Medroxyprogesterone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chanca Piedra interacts with whole categories of medication. Estradiol, Medroxyprogesterone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chanca Piedra in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Estradiol, Medroxyprogesterone

Estradiol, Medroxyprogesterone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, chanca piedra might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract increases CYP1A2 activity. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates and lower serum concentrations. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for your hormone combo (estradiol with medroxyprogesterone). Your body partly clears estrogen using a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In laboratory dishes, chanca piedra seems to speed that enzyme up. If that happened in real life, it could break down the estrogen a bit faster and lower its levels, which in theory might make it work less well. You could notice things like the return of hot flashes, night sweats, or breakthrough spotting.

I want to be honest, though: this is only test-tube data and has never been reported in actual people, so the real-world risk looks small. Still, since this matters for your symptom control, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before you add chanca piedra.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Estradiol, Medroxyprogesterone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, use of chanca piedra might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for your Divitren (a combination of estradiol and medroxyprogesterone). Both of these hormones are partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, chanca piedra seems to slow that enzyme down. If it does the same thing in people, your body might clear these hormones a little more slowly, which could nudge their levels up. With estrogen and progestin, that can mean more of the usual side effects like breast tenderness, bloating, nausea, headaches, or breakthrough spotting.

I want to be honest, though: this is theoretical and has only been seen in test tubes, never reported in real patients. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since hormone therapy carries its own risks, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding chanca piedra.

About Chanca Piedra

What is Chanca Piedra?

Chanca Piedra
  • Kidney stones
  • Gallstones
  • Liver support
  • Urinary tract health
  • Digestive complaints

Chanca piedra is a tropical herb traditionally used as a 'stone breaker' for kidney and gallstones, and for liver and urinary health. Human evidence for these uses is limited and mostly small or preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a medical condition or take medications.
