Indinavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, use of chanca piedra might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with indinavir (Crixivan): your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear it out. In lab tests, chanca piedra appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in people, indinavir could linger at higher levels than expected, which might mean more of its known side effects, things like kidney stones, belly upset and nausea, headaches, or changes in liver values.

Now, the honest part: this is theoretical. It comes from test-tube research only and has not been seen in actual patients. Still, HIV medications are too important to gamble with, so don't add chanca piedra to your routine without first checking with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Indinavir Used For?

  • Indinavir is used along with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Indinavir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. Although indinavir does not cure HIV, it may decrease your chance of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related illnesses such as serious infections or cancer. Taking these medications along with practicing safer sex and making other lifestyle changes may decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to other people.
