Lumateperone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, use of chanca piedra might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear lumateperone (Caplyta) out of your system. In test tube studies, chanca piedra appears to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in people, lumateperone could build up a bit higher than expected, which might mean more of its usual side effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, or feeling foggy.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is only a theoretical concern from lab research, and it has never actually been reported in real patients. So it's not a reason to panic. Still, since lumateperone is an important medication, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before adding chanca piedra so they can keep an eye on how you feel.

What Is Lumateperone Used For?

Brand name: Caplyta

Caplyta (lumateperone) is approved for adults with schizophrenia, depressive episodes associated with bipolar I or II disorder (bipolar depression), and as an add-on treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD).

For bipolar depression, Caplyta can be used on its own or alongside lithium or valproate. For MDD, Caplyta is used together with an antidepressant — not on its own as a standalone antidepressant.
