Chanca Piedra and Naproxen, Sumatriptan

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chanca Piedra interacts with whole categories of medication. Naproxen, Sumatriptan falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chanca Piedra in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Naproxen, Sumatriptan

Naproxen, Sumatriptan falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research suggests that methyl brevifolincarboxylate, a constituent isolated from chanca piedra, can inhibit platelet aggregation. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Treximet combines naproxen (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever) with sumatriptan (a migraine drug). The piece that matters here is the naproxen. Like other NSAIDs, naproxen can irritate the stomach lining and make it a little harder for your blood to clot. The concern with chanca piedra is that one of its compounds appeared to slow platelet clumping in a lab dish. Stacking that on top of naproxen could, in theory, nudge your bleeding risk a bit higher.

I want to be honest about how weak this evidence is. It comes from test-tube work only and has never actually been seen in people. Still, watch for things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, dark or bloody stools, or stomach upset. Before combining them, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you take any other blood thinner.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Naproxen, Sumatriptan also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, chanca piedra might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract increases CYP1A2 activity. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates and lower serum concentrations. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Treximet combines naproxen (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever) with sumatriptan (a migraine medicine). Both can be partly processed by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Lab studies hint that chanca piedra might speed up this enzyme, which could make your body clear these drugs a little faster. In theory, that might mean your migraine relief or pain relief doesn't last as long or feels weaker.

Here's the honest part: this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research. It has never actually been reported in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you notice your migraines aren't responding as well after adding chanca piedra, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Chanca Piedra

What is Chanca Piedra?

Chanca Piedra
  • Kidney stones
  • Gallstones
  • Liver support
  • Urinary tract health
  • Digestive complaints

Chanca piedra is a tropical herb traditionally used as a 'stone breaker' for kidney and gallstones, and for liver and urinary health. Human evidence for these uses is limited and mostly small or preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a medical condition or take medications.
