Why this applies to Nimodipine

Nimodipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Chanca Piedra interacts with.

Theoretically, use of chanca piedra might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that chanca piedra extract inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, chanca piedra might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with nimodipine: your body clears it using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab studies, chanca piedra appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, nimodipine could build up in your blood and have a stronger effect than intended.

For this medicine, that mostly means more low blood pressure, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, or flushing. I'll be honest, though, this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research and hasn't been seen in actual patients. Still, nimodipine is usually given during a serious hospital recovery, so don't add chanca piedra without first checking with your pharmacist or doctor.

Theoretically, concomitant use of chanca piedra with antihypertensive drugs might have additive blood pressure lowering effects.
Animal research suggests that chanca piedra can decrease blood pressure. However, this effect was not observed in most hypertensive patients treated with chanca piedra for 10 days.

Here's the simple version: nimodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels, and one of its effects is lowering blood pressure. Chanca piedra might nudge blood pressure down a little too, so in theory the two together could add up and drop your pressure more than expected. That could show up as dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling faint when you stand up, or a headache.

The good news is that this concern is mostly theoretical. It comes from animal studies, and in human research chanca piedra didn't really lower blood pressure in most people. Since nimodipine is used in a serious hospital setting after a brain bleed, don't add any supplement without checking first. Please run it by your doctor or pharmacist.

What Is Nimodipine Used For?

Brand names: Nimotop, Nymalize

Nimodipine — available as capsules and oral solution — is used to improve neurological outcomes after a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a type of bleeding that occurs around the brain when an intracranial berry aneurysm ruptures. It works to reduce the incidence and severity of ischemic deficits (areas of the brain damaged by reduced blood flow) that can follow this kind of bleed.

This use applies across nimodipine capsules, nimodipine oral solution, and Nymalize oral solution. It is indicated for adult patients regardless of how severe their neurological condition is at the time treatment begins.
