Sofosbuvir falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels of drugs cleared by p-glycoprotein.
Pharmacokinetic research in healthy volunteers suggests that danshen might affect p-glycoprotein activity. Taking danshen extract 1 gram three times daily for 10 days prior to receiving fexofenadine 60 mg increases peak levels of fexofenadine, a p-glycoprotein substrate, by 27.4% and area under the curve (AUC) by 37.2%.

Here's the connection worth knowing about. Sofosbuvir (Sovaldi) is carried around your body partly by a transporter called P-glycoprotein, which acts like a doorway that moves the drug in and out of cells. Danshen appears to slow that doorway down. In one study in healthy people, danshen raised blood levels of a similar P-glycoprotein drug by roughly a third.

So in theory, danshen could nudge sofosbuvir levels a bit higher. The good news is that sofosbuvir is generally well tolerated, with mild effects like headache or fatigue, so this is more of a caution than an alarm. The evidence here is limited. Since you're treating hepatitis C and want the medicine working at its best, please run danshen by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Sofosbuvir

What Is Sofosbuvir Used For?

Brand name: Sovaldi

Sovaldi (sofosbuvir) is used to treat chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. In adults, it treats genotype 1, 2, 3, or 4 HCV — with or without compensated cirrhosis (mild liver scarring that the liver is still managing). It is always used as part of a combination regimen with other antiviral medicines.

In children 3 years and older, Sovaldi is approved for genotype 2 or 3 HCV, with or without compensated cirrhosis, in combination with ribavirin. Sovaldi is also used with ribavirin in adults with HCV-related liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) who are waiting for a liver transplant, to help prevent HCV from returning after transplant.
