Why this applies to Mometasone

Mometasone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Here's the good news on this pairing: mometasone is broken down by an enzyme called CYP3A4, and Danshen can nudge that enzyme, but how you actually use mometasone matters a lot. When you put Elocon cream on your skin, very little of it gets into your bloodstream. So even though Danshen might speed up or slow down CYP3A4 (the research is mixed, with longer use revving it up and a single dose slowing it), there just isn't much whole-body drug for it to act on with a topical product.

The inhaler form (Asmanex) is also mostly local in the lungs. The bottom line: a real-world interaction here is unlikely, and the evidence is preliminary. Still, since Danshen can affect bleeding and other heart medicines, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before starting it.

Mometasone Furoate topical products are used to relieve the inflammation and itching (pruritus) that come with corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses — a broad category of skin conditions that respond to steroid treatment.

Mometasone Furoate Topical Solution (Lotion) is specifically indicated for these skin conditions in patients 12 years of age and older. Mometasone Furoate cream may be used in adults and in children 2 years of age and older.
