Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that danshen tincture and various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP1A2. However, this activity has not been shown in humans when theophylline, a CYP1A2 substrate, was used as a target drug.

Here's the short version on combining Danshen with your birth control pill (Nordette, Microgynon, and similar combos of levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol). In test-tube studies, Danshen appears to slow down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps process certain medicines. The thinking is that if that enzyme is blocked, a little more of the drug could hang around, possibly nudging up estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or mood changes.

But here's the reassuring part: this is only theoretical, based on lab work, not real people. When researchers actually tested this in humans with another CYP1A2 drug, they didn't see the effect. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since both can touch blood clotting, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Danshen.

Pharmacokinetic research in healthy volunteers suggests that danshen might affect p-glycoprotein activity. Taking danshen extract 1 gram three times daily for 10 days prior to receiving fexofenadine 60 mg increases peak levels of fexofenadine, a p-glycoprotein substrate, by 27.4% and area under the curve (AUC) by 37.2%.

Your birth control pill (Nordette, Microgynon, and similar combos) is partly handled by a transporter in your body called P-glycoprotein. In a small study, Danshen slowed that transporter down, which led to higher blood levels of a test drug that uses the same pathway. If the same thing happened with your pill, the hormone levels could nudge a bit higher.

In real life, this is a fairly mild and not fully proven concern, and your pill is not a prodrug, so it would still work. Slightly higher hormone levels might mean more of the usual side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting. The evidence here is limited, so don't panic, but do mention Danshen to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially with concentrated supplement doses.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Your birth control pill (the levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol combo) gets broken down by an enzyme in your gut and liver called CYP3A4. Here's the wrinkle with Danshen: when taken regularly for a couple of weeks, it seems to speed that enzyme up, which can clear the hormones out of your body faster and lower their levels. In plain terms, taking Danshen daily could make your pill less reliable, raising the risk of breakthrough bleeding or, more importantly, an unplanned pregnancy.

This comes from small human studies using midazolam, not the pill itself, so it's a reasonable concern rather than a proven one. Because pregnancy prevention is the goal, I'd play it safe. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two, and ask whether a backup method is wise.
