Why this applies to Quetiapine

Quetiapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Danshen might alter the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Preliminary clinical research in healthy males shows that the administration of danshen for 10-14 days induces intestinal CYP3A4 and increases the clearance of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate. The maximum concentration of midazolam was decreased by 31% to 67%, and drug levels were decreased by 27% to 80%. However, a single dose of danshen has the opposite effect, increasing maximum concentrations of midazolam by 87%.

Your body relies on a liver and gut enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down quetiapine. Here's the tricky part with Danshen: taken regularly for a week or two, it seems to speed up that enzyme, which could clear quetiapine out faster and leave you with weaker effects. That might mean your symptoms (mood swings, trouble sleeping, or psychosis) are not as well controlled. Oddly, a single dose appears to do the opposite and could briefly raise levels, possibly adding to drowsiness or dizziness.

This is based on early research using a different drug, so the size of the effect with quetiapine isn't certain. Quetiapine is not a prodrug, so it still needs that intact enzyme to work normally. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Quetiapine Used For?

Brand names: Seroquel, Dopaquel

Quetiapine treats schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and certain age groups of children and adolescents. For bipolar disorder, it is approved for manic episodes (both as a stand-alone treatment and alongside lithium or divalproex) and for depressive episodes.

The extended-release form of quetiapine is also approved as add-on therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who are already taking an antidepressant. The regular tablet form is not approved for this use.
