Why this applies to Ceritinib

Ceritinib falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Ephedra interacts with.

Theoretically, ephedra might have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval.
Even in healthy volunteers, EKG changes including prolonged QT interval and premature atrial contractions have been reported with ingestion of recommended doses of ephedra. Ephedra may have an additive effect with drugs that prolong the QT interval. This may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Here's the concern with combining these two. Ceritinib (Zykadia) is known to stretch out the heart's electrical recovery time, something we call QT prolongation. Ephedra, because of its stimulant compounds like ephedrine, can do the same thing on its own, even at normal doses in healthy people. Stacked together, the two could add up and raise the chance of a dangerous irregular heartbeat.

This isn't about ephedra changing how your body processes ceritinib. It's that both nudge the heart in the same risky direction. Symptoms to watch for would be palpitations, dizziness, or fainting. On top of that, ephedra is banned from supplements in the U.S. for safety reasons. Please don't pair these, and check with your oncologist or pharmacist about safer options.

Here's the concern with pairing ephedra and Zykadia (ceritinib). Ceritinib already comes with a known risk of stressing the liver. Doctors often check your liver blood work (things like ALT and AST) while you're on it, because it can sometimes cause liver inflammation. Ephedra-containing supplements have been linked to liver injury too. So putting them together could, in theory, add up and make liver problems more likely.

I'll be honest: this is a theoretical interaction based on how each one behaves, not proven cases of the two together. Still, ephedra is banned in U.S. supplements for good reason and isn't worth the risk during cancer treatment. Please run any supplement past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

Zykadia (ceritinib) is used to treat adults with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) — meaning lung cancer that has spread — when the tumor tests positive for a gene abnormality called ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase). An FDA-approved test must confirm ALK positivity before starting treatment.
