Here's the concern with combining ephedra and Empliciti (elotuzumab). Elotuzumab is an antibody given by infusion for multiple myeloma, and on its own it can sometimes stress the liver, which is why your team checks liver labs during treatment. Ephedra supplements have been tied to a number of real cases of liver injury too. So the worry is that stacking the two could add up and put extra strain on your liver.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical interaction based on how each one behaves, not proven cases of the pair together. Even so, ephedra is banned in the U.S. and isn't something I'd recommend with cancer therapy. Watch for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and please loop in your oncologist or pharmacist before using any ephedra product.

About Elotuzumab Injection

What Is Elotuzumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Empliciti

Empliciti is used to treat multiple myeloma (a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow) in adults who have already tried other treatments. It is always given as part of a combination regimen — never alone.

Empliciti combined with lenalidomide and dexamethasone is used in adults who have received one to three prior therapies. Empliciti combined with pomalidomide and dexamethasone is used in adults who have received at least two prior therapies, including lenalidomide and a proteasome inhibitor.
