Why this applies to Glipizide

Glipizide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Red Clover interacts with.

Theoretically, red clover might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9; however, a small clinical study found no effect.
In vitro evidence suggests that red clover might inhibit CYP2C9. However, a clinical study in healthy postmenopausal individuals shows that taking red clover capsules standardized to contain 60 mg isoflavones twice daily for 14 days does not affect the pharmacokinetics of tolbutamide, a CYP2C9 probe substrate.

Here's the gist for glipizide and red clover. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to clear glipizide out of your system. In a test tube, red clover's plant compounds looked like they might slow that enzyme down a bit. If that actually happened in your body, glipizide could linger and push your blood sugar lower than intended, which could mean shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or a true low (hypoglycemia).

The reassuring part: when researchers actually tested this in people, red clover did not change how the body handled a similar CYP2C9 drug. So this is mostly a theoretical, low-likelihood concern. Still, it's smart to watch your sugar readings and let your pharmacist or doctor know before adding red clover.

Glipizide tablets and glipizide extended-release tablets are both used as an add-on to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not used for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious complication of uncontrolled blood sugar).
