Dextroamphetamine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.

Here's the short version on combining L-theanine with dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine, Xelstrym): the concern on file is that theanine might nudge serotonin levels in the brain, and stimulants like dextroamphetamine can also touch serotonin pathways. In theory, stacking two things that affect serotonin could add up. In reality, the evidence here is weak and conflicting. Some studies suggest theanine raises serotonin, others suggest it lowers it, and there are no reports of theanine actually causing serotonin-related problems.

So this is rated minor and unlikely. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but it's still worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you ever notice jitteriness, a racing heart, agitation, sweating, or shakiness. Don't change your dextroamphetamine on your own.

What Is Dextroamphetamine Used For?

Brand name: Dexedrine

Dextroamphetamine treats two conditions: ADHD and narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing uncontrollable daytime sleepiness). It is available in multiple forms — tablets, extended-release capsules, oral solution, and a skin patch — and the approved age ranges vary by product.

Oral tablets (Zenzedi, generic) and oral solutions (Procentra, generic) are approved for ADHD in children as young as 3 years old and for narcolepsy. Extended-release capsules (Dexedrine, generic) are approved for ADHD in children ages 6 to 16 and for narcolepsy. Xelstrym, the transdermal patch, is approved only for ADHD — in adults and children ages 6 and older — and is not indicated for narcolepsy.
