Theanine and Zuclopenthizol

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Theanine interacts with whole categories of medication. Zuclopenthizol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Theanine in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Zuclopenthizol

Zuclopenthizol falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Zuclopenthixol (Clopixol) is an antipsychotic that already tends to make people feel drowsy or slowed down. The idea here is simple: theanine, the calming amino acid from tea, may gently nudge up your brain's GABA activity, which can add to that sedating effect. So in theory, pairing the two could leave you feeling a bit sleepier, foggier, or more sluggish than the medication does on its own.

I'll be honest with you though, this concern is theoretical. It's based on how these things work, not on solid studies, and it's rated minor and unlikely. A cup of tea is very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated theanine supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and watch for extra drowsiness, especially when driving.

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS

2 of 2

Zuclopenthizol also falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS.

Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence C

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture with zuclopenthixol (Clopixol) and L-theanine. Zuclopenthixol is an older antipsychotic that works mainly on dopamine, but it does touch serotonin pathways too, which is why it gets grouped with serotonergic drugs. Theanine may nudge brain chemicals like serotonin, GABA, and dopamine, so on paper there's a theoretical overlap.

The good news: the evidence here is weak and mixed. Some studies say theanine raises serotonin, others say it lowers it, and importantly, there are no real-world reports of theanine causing serotonin syndrome or worsening side effects. So a true problem is unlikely. Still, since both can affect mood and alertness, just let your pharmacist or doctor know before adding theanine so they can keep an eye on things.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

About Theanine

What is Theanine?

Theanine
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Relaxation and calm
  • Sleep support
  • Focus and cognitive function

Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
