Defibrotide Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Tiratricol interacts with.

Theoretically, tiratricol might increase the hypoprothrombinemic effects of oral anticoagulants.
Tiratricol is related to thyroid hormones such as levothyroxine. The hypoprothrombinemic effects of oral anticoagulants, including warfarin (Coumadin), are increased by levothyroxine due to increased catabolism of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors. It is not known if tiratricol has a similar effect.

Here's the short version on combining tiratricol with Defitelio (defibrotide). Defibrotide is a clot-preventing medicine given by IV in the hospital, usually to very sick transplant patients. Tiratricol acts like thyroid hormone, and thyroid hormones can speed up how fast your body breaks down certain clotting factors. In theory, that could add to defibrotide's blood-thinning action and raise the risk of bleeding, things like bruising easily, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or more serious internal bleeding.

I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on how these drugs work, not proven studies with defibrotide. Defibrotide is not a prodrug, so it doesn't flip the direction. On top of that, tiratricol is an unsafe, FDA-warned ingredient you shouldn't be using at all. Please talk with your care team before mixing anything with defibrotide.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Brand name: Defitelio

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
